What are the Presuppositions of NLP?

The Presuppositions of NLP are a set of convenient beliefs or assumptions that, if you adopt them, make you more likely to create better results in your life. They are not presented as absolute truths — rather, they are frames of mind that increase flexibility, resourcefulness and effectiveness.

  • Everyone has a unique model of the world
  • Respect other people's model of the world
  • The map is not the territory
  • People are not their behaviours
  • Behaviours should be evaluated in terms of context and ecology
  • All behaviour has a positive intention
  • The most important thing about a person is their behaviour
  • Everyone has all the resources they need to get what they want
  • You cannot not communicate
  • The meaning of your communication is the response you get
  • There is no failure, only feedback
  • If what you are doing is not working, do something different
  • The person with the most flexibility of behaviour controls the system
  • Mind and body are part of the same system
  • People make the best choices available to them given their model of the world
