The 6 Step Reframe is an NLP technique used to communicate with a part of the unconscious mind that is responsible for an unwanted behaviour, and to negotiate a new behaviour that fulfils the same positive intention.
- Identify the problem part and the problem behaviour — establish what the unwanted behaviour is and the part of the unconscious mind responsible for it
- Set up direct communication with the problem part and acknowledge its benefits — establish a signal system (e.g. one hand gets warmer or cooler for yes/no)
- Get clear signals from the part — confirm the signal system is working reliably
- Ask the part for the highest positive intention behind the behaviour — every behaviour has a positive intention at some level
- Ask the person's creative part to generate new choices or behaviours that fulfil the same positive intention, and have the problem part choose from at least three alternatives
- Check for congruence — ask if all other parts are in agreement with the new behaviour. If not, return to step 5
Test and future pace — check that the new behaviour is installed and project it into future situations.
